Rolling 401 Assets Into An Ira
When you retire or leave your job for any reason, you have the right to roll over your 401 assets to an IRA. You have a number of direct rollover options:
Rolling your traditional 401 to a traditional IRA. You can roll your traditional 401 assets into a new or existing traditional IRA. To initiate the rollover, you complete the forms required by both the IRA provider you choose and your 401 plan administrator. The money is moved directly, either electronically or by check. No taxes are due on the assets you move, and any new earnings accumulate tax deferred.
Rolling your Roth 401 to a Roth IRA. You can roll your Roth 401 assets into a new or existing Roth IRA with a custodian of your choice. You complete the forms required by the IRA provider and your 401 plan administrator, and the money is moved directly either electronically or by check. No taxes are due when the money is moved and any new earnings accumulate tax deferred. Earnings are eligible for tax-free withdrawal once the IRA has been open at least five years and you are at least 59½.
Rolling your traditional 401 to a Roth IRA. If your traditional 401 plan permits direct rollovers to a Roth IRA, you can roll over assets in your traditional 401 to a new or existing Roth IRA. Keep in mind youll have to pay taxes on the rollover amount you convert.

Unfortunately, you typically have to go through your former employer or a vendor they use. With many 401 plans, you cannot request a transfer using paperwork from the receiving IRA custodian.
Who to Contact
If you work for a large company, you can most likely contact your 401 provider directly. For example, contact Fidelity, Vanguard, or whatever website you use to manage your account. Alternatively, call whoever prints your 401 statements. If you work for a small company, you may need to contact the human resources department, which might just be the person who hired you. What Happens If You Cash Out Your 401
If you withdraw 401 money before age 59 ½, you could face a 10% penalty from the IRS on top of paying applicable income taxes. There are some exceptions, such as if you leave your job at age 55 or later or if you make a hardship or other eligible withdrawal, but its a good idea to consult a tax professional before cashing out your 401.
No matter when you cash out your 401, though, you may owe income tax on what you withdraw if its a traditional account or investment earnings in a Roth account that you didnt start contributing to at least five years before.

Option : Keep Your Savings With Your Previous Employers Plan
If your previous employers 401 allows you to maintain your account and you are happy with the plans investment options, you can leave it. This might be the most convenient choice, but you should still evaluate your options. Each year, American workers manage to lose track of billions of dollars in old retirement savings accounts, so you should make sure to track your account regularly, review your investments as part of your overall portfolio and keep the beneficiaries up to date.
Some things to think about if youre considering keeping your money in your previous employers plan:

Move Your Old 401 Assets Into A New Employers Plan
You have the option to avoid paying taxes by completing a direct, or “trustee-to-trustee,” transfer from your old plan to your new employer’s plan, if the employer’s plan allows it.
It can be easy to pay less attention to your old retirement accounts, since you can no longer contribute. So, transferring old 401 assets to your new plan could make it easier to track your retirement savings.
You also have borrowing power if your new retirement plan lets participants borrow from their plan assets. The interest rate is often low. You may even repay the interest to yourself. If you roll your old plan into your new plan, youll have a bigger base of assets against which to borrow. One common borrowing limit is 50% of your vested balance, up to $50,000. Each plan sets its own rules.
Here are a few important steps to take to successfully move assets to your new employers retirement plan so as not to trigger a tax penalty:
Step 1: Find out whether your new employer has a defined contribution plan, such as a 401 or 403, that allows rollovers from other plans. Evaluate the new plan’s investment options to see whether they fit your investment style. If your new employer doesn’t have a retirement plan, or if the portfolio options aren’t appealing, consider staying in your old employer’s plan. You could also set up a new rollover IRA at a credit union, bank, or brokerage firm of your choice.
The instructions you get should ask for this type of information:

You generally have two options for where to get an IRA: an online broker or a robo-advisor. The option you choose depends on whether you’d rather have your investments managed for you, or you’d rather do it yourself.
-
If you’re not interested in picking individual investments, a robo-advisor can do that for you. Robo-advisors build personalized portfolios using low-cost funds based on your preferences, then rebalance those funds over time to help you stay on track, all for a much lower fee than a conventional investment manager.
-
If you want to build and manage your own investment portfolio, an online broker lets you buy and sell investments yourself. Look for a provider that charges no account fees, offers a wide selection of low-cost investments and has a reputation for good customer service.

Rolling Into An Ira Stay On Top Of The Move
If you decide to roll over your 401 into an IRA not sponsored by your new employer, your IRA sponsor or advisor will help guide you through the process to ensure the money gets to the proper destination in a timely manner.
Be sure your new broker/advisor has experience with rollovers, especially if you have company stock in your 401. Why? Because company stock is liquidated when its rolled into an IRA, and later, when distributed, may be taxed as ordinary income resulting in a higher tax liability.
As recommended above, stay vigilant until your money is safely in its new home and that you have proof typically verified online through the IRA providers website.

Why Transfer Your 401 To An Ira
Why would you move savings from an old 401 plan to an IRA? The main reason is to keep control of your money. In an IRA, you get to decide what happens with the funds: You choose where to invest and how much you pay in fees, and you dont need anybodys permission to take money out of the account.
More Control
Cost and providers: In your 401, your employer controls almost everything. Employers choose vendors for the plan, which determines the investment lineup available. Those might not be investments you like, and they might be more expensive than you want. If you want to practice socially-responsible investing, the 401 may lack options for that.
Timing: 401 plans also require extra steps when you want to withdraw funds: An administrator needs to verify that you are eligible to access your money before youre allowed to take a distribution. Plus, some 401 plans dont allow partial withdrawalsyou might need to take your full balance.
Easy Withdrawals
If you need access to your 401 savings for any reason, its easier when the money is in an IRA. In most cases, you call your IRA provider or request a withdrawal online. Depending on what you own in your account, the funds might go out as soon as the next business day. But 401 plans might need a few extra days for everybody to sign off on the distribution.

How To Transfer Your Retirement Savings Accounts
Americans often find that their retirement savings accounts, usually their largest personal financial asset, can remain with a former employer well after theyve severed ties. If youve transferred jobs more than once, you may find yourself with several retirement accounts at various employers.
Rolling over your retirement accounts to an IRA is usually in your best interest. Not only does this consolidate your assets into one place, making them easier to keep track of, IRAs usually offer more investment options and flexibility than a 401. Rolling over to a 401 can be a bit tricky, and if you do it incorrectly, you may find yourself paying a penalty.
When you choose to rollover your retirement assets, do some research to decide which brokerage firm you want to move the account to. If you already have retail accounts, you may choose to open your account with the same firm. You may even receive discounts if your assets are over a set minimum account. Ask about fees, including low balance fees and annual fees, and choose an account with minimum fees.
Once youve chosen a brokerage company and open the account, ask for a direct rollover. With a direct rollover, the check written with the proceeds of your 401 account will be made out in the IRA trustees name rather than directly to you. If the check is made out to you, tax withholdings will be kept, and youll be subject to a penalty.

If you continue working until and beyond 72 years of age, you may be excused from required minimum distributions if your new employers plan allows it.
How To Roll Over An Old 401
8 Minute Read | September 27, 2021
Back in the old days, it was pretty common for someone to work for the same company for 40 years before retiring with a nice pension and a gold watch. Well, those days are long gone.
A recent study found that the youngest baby boomers worked 12 different jobs over the course of their careers.1 Did you hear that? Twelve! And younger generations are even more likely to look for greener employment pastures. In fact, almost a third of millennials say they would quit their jobs as soon as possible if they could.2
But in the process, many American workers are leaving behind a trail of forgotten 401s, sometimes with thousands of dollars in retirement savings left behind!
Theres even a name for those retirement accounts that are left behind: orphan 401s. Even the name is sad! Its time to stop for a minute and think about giving the money in those long-forgotten accounts a new home.
Thats where rollovers come in.
