I asked Mike why 401K fees are so hard to find. He didnt have a direct answer but he gave me this nugget. Prior to the 80s, most employers used a defined-benefit pension plan as the main benefit to provide their employees a secure retirement. With a pension, the company controlled all the investment decisions. There was no need for the employee to be aware of the fees, investment choices, etc. The employees would be taken care of. The risk was on the employer to make the right decisions.

Then along comes the 401K, the employee controlled plan, where a benefit is not defined, but the risk is shifted to the employee. Mike says that although employees are now responsible for their own retirement, they didnt get full control of investment choices and they didnt get the necessary information to help them make the decisions they need to make.

What Is An Aggressive 401 Investment

When experts speak of being aggressive, they generally mean how much of your assets are in stocks or stock funds. Stocks are an attractive long-term investment, but they fluctuate a lot in the short term. Thats problematic, especially for soon-to-retire investors. If all or almost all of your retirement account is in stocks or stock funds, its aggressive.

While being more aggressive can make a lot of sense if you have a long time until retirement, it can really sink you financially if you need the money in less than five years. To reduce risk, investors can add more bond funds to their portfolio or even hold some CDs.

A large downturn in the market immediately preceding retirement can have devastating effects on an individuals standard of living in retirement, says Dr. Robert Johnson, finance professor at Creighton Universitys Heider College of Business.

Johnson points to those who retired at the end of 2008 and who were invested only in the Standard & Poors 500 Index , which contains hundreds of top companies. If they were invested in the S& P 500, they would have seen their assets fall by 37 percent in one year, he says.

But those who had some investments in other assets such as bonds or even cash would have seen a much lower overall decline. Of course, any money in the S& P 500 would have declined by a similar amount, but by having fewer eggs in that basket, their overall portfolio declined less.

Check On Your 401 Periodically

As mentioned, it’s essential to check how much is in your 401 throughout the year. Ideally, more than once, however, annual checks are enough.

The reason to monitor your retirement savings is to keep up with your retirement goals. For instance, as you near retirement, you may want to move your money to safer investments like bonds. Or, if one area has over-performed others, you might decide to reallocate your money to limit your exposure to one category.

Typically these drastic swings in your portfolio won’t happen that quickly. But by scheduling an annual check of your 401 balance, you’ll get a good picture of your 401 portfolio.


Circumstances When You Can Withdraw From A 401k If You Have An Outstanding Loan

Each 401 plan has different rules on 401 loans and 401 withdrawals. If your employerâs 401 plan allows employees to tap into their retirement money, you may be required to provide some proof to document that you are in an urgent financial need to get approved. The approval process is rigorous since allowing frivolous withdrawals puts the 401 plan at risk of losing its tax-favored status.

Some of the circumstances when you could withdraw money from your 401 plan if you have an unpaid loan include:

Roll Over 401 If You Have an Outstanding Loan

If you terminate employment with an outstanding 401 loan, you can rollover the money to an IRA or new employerâs 401. As long as the loan repayment was in good standing, the employer will rollover your retirement money net of the outstanding 401 loan. You will have until the tax due date to pay off the 401 loan balance.

For example, assume that you have a $50,000 vested 401 balance, including an outstanding 401 loan of $15,000. If you quit your job and request the plan sponsor to rollover the retirement savings to your new IRA, the plan sponsor will reduce the vested 401 balance by the $15,000 outstanding loan, and disburse the remaining $35,000 to your IRA. You will then have until the tax due date to come up with the $15,000 outstanding loan, after which you can rollover the $15,000 401 balance to your IRA.

Contact The 401 Plan Administrator

If your employer is no longer around, try getting in touch with the plan administrator, which may be listed on an old statement.

If youre unable to find an old statement, you still may be able to find the administrator by searching for the retirement plans tax return, known as Form 5500.

You can find a 5500s by the searching the name of your former employer at

If you locate a Form 5500 for an old plan, it should have the contact information on it.

Youve Got Options But Some May Be Better Than Others

After you leave your job, there are several options for your 401. You may be able to leave your account where it is. Alternatively, you may roll over the money from the old 401 into a new account with your new employer, or roll it into an individual retirement account , but you must first see when you are eligible to participate in the new plan. You can also take some or all of the money out, but there are serious tax consequences to that.

Make sure to understand the particulars of the options available to you before deciding which route to take.

Turn Your Hobby Into Income During Retirement

While you may not want to get a real job after you retire, there are likely plenty of options that can help generate revenue for you. Follow These 2 Tips To Prevent This Issue

  • Request a Distribution as Soon as You Terminate Employment: when you leave your job, consider requesting a distribution of your benefits right away, so you can roll those funds into your new employers plan or an individual retirement account.
  • Update Your Contact Information with Your Former Employer Every Time You Move: If you left your past retirement account with your previous employer, make sure you contact the company every time you move to update your contact information or request a distribution. If the employer has your contact information, you should receive benefit statements at least annually. If you wait years to take action, changes may make it hard to locate your account.

    National Registry Of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits

    Check Your 401K

    If your online sleuthing doesnt turn up anything, you can search the National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits, which helps employers connect with former employees who havent claimed their retirement benefits.

    Just head to the website and enter your Social Security number, and it will search for any retirement plans associated with that SSN. If one is found, the site will contact the plan administrator on your behalf, or you can do so yourself. Youll then receive a benefit election form that allows you to specify how you would like to handle the funds.

    Note that if a plan doesnt show up on this registry, that doesnt mean you dont have one. It may just mean that your former employer hasnt added your records to the database yet. The site notes that you should check back in the future, as more participants are added to the database daily.

    Missing or late contributions.

    Check your statements to be sure that your contributions are being made in a timely and regular manner. By law, employers generally must deposit your 401 contribution in your account within 15 business days after the end of the month in which they withhold your contribution. For companies with fewer than 100 participants, the deadline is within seven business days. The contribution amounts should match the amounts deducted from your paychecks.

    Incorrect investments.

    Make sure that your contributions are going into the mutual funds that you selected, and in the correct percentages. If you change your investments, the change should be reflected on your statement.

    Changing investment menus.

    Have the investment options for the plan changed without your notification?

    Fund management changes.

    Beware if your 401 plan managers such as the plan administrator, trustee or recordkeeper change more than once every two years.

    Missing statements.

    You should receive 401 statements at least quarterly, according to federal law.

    Vested Versus Unvested Amounts

    When you find your 401 balance, you might notice that some of the account is vested and some of it isn’t. Amounts that are vested are yours no matter what if you leave the company, you get to take that money with you, but you would lose any unvested amounts. You’re always 100 percent vested in your contributions. However, your employer may make contributions to your 401 plan on your behalf but might put vesting requirements on the money. According to federal law, contributions must vest at least as fast as either the cliff vesting or graded vesting schedules. With cliff vesting, you must be fully vested at the end of three years of service. With graded vesting, you must be 20 percent vested by the end of your second year of service, and must vest an additional 20 percent each year after that, making you fully vested by the end of your sixth year.

    Checking Your 401 Plan Balance

    Your 401 plan is required to provide you an individual benefit statement at least once a year if your 401 plan doesnt allow you to direct the investments in your account or at least every quarter if you can direct your investments.

    In addition to these statements, some 401 plans offer online access to your retirement accounts to check your balance or rebalance your portfolio. Your human resources department for your company can provide you with all the information you need to set up an online login to check your 401 balance.

    Why Employers Offer 401s

    In 1978, when the law authorizing the creation of the 401 was passed, employers commonly attracted and retained talent by offering a secure retirement through a pension . The 401 created an entirely new system, with more flexibility for both employer and employee. One of the ways it did so was by giving employers the option to match employee contributions.

    Matching is a very transparent process: for every dollar you put into your 401, your employer also puts in a dollar, up to a certain amount or percentage of your income. Theres no mystery here. If your employer promises to match all 401 contributions up to 5% of your income, and you contribute that amount every month, your employer will match you dollar for dollar, every month. Its a win-win situation. You are doubling your money, and your employer is building a happy workforce.

    How Does Epf Work

    As mentioned earlier, both the employer and the employee contribute 12% of the basic monthly wages towards EPF. While the employees 12% contribution goes fully towards the EPF, the employers 12% contribution is divided as follows:

    • 33% towards Employee Pension Scheme
    • 67% towards Employee Provident Fund
    • 1% towards EPF Administration Charges
    • 5% towards Employee Deposit Linked Insurance
    • 01% towards EDLI Administration Charges

    To give your retirement savings an extra boost, Jessica Macdonald, a vice president at Fidelity, recommends opting into an auto-escalation feature, if your employer offers it, which will automatically boost your savings rate by 1% or 2% each year.

    And always contribute enough to get the full employer match, she said, “that way you won’t leave money on the table.”

    Overall, aim to save 15% of your income in a retirement account, including the employer contribution, Macdonald also advised.
